Re: Brentford v Leeds Utd Match Thread - Post Match Debate
We have a weird obsession with signing players whose best qualities aren't linked to the primary role of there position.
Rodrigo a striker who doesn't score goals.
James a winger who doesn't create or score goals.
Llorente a defender whose not particularly good at defending.
Firpo a left back who can't defend.
The club have a scouting department who don't understand the league imo.
Orta did the same at Boro, signed players who didn't do well in England but some went and did OK abroad in a different slower league.

Blatantly offside, shouldn't have gone to VAR.
Who was the tit in the VAR room making all the decisions?

Quality attackers finish those chances we had and then we aren't so open on the break and susceptible to the counter.
The defence was poor but it starts with not having the required attacking Quality.

I understand we can't afford players in England, but we're looking in the wrong places. France is full of bargains and they produce the best CBs in the world. West Ham found Soucek and Coufal in the Czech leagues. Orta either goes after unrealistic targets or rejects from Spain's top clubs.Cjay wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 5:26 pm We have a weird obsession with signing players whose best qualities aren't linked to the primary role of there position.

100% correct SG. IMO Orta's obsession with massively overpriced rejects from La Liga is threatening the club's continued presence in the PL. It's not by chance that Orta's best signing was from a French club. His second best signing ( Meslier ) was also from a French club. All his La Liga signings have been overpriced duds signed on cripplingly expensive salaries.SG90 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 5:31 pm I understand we can't afford players in England, but we're looking in the wrong places. All well and good Paul, but you are not factoring in the English football establishment’s anti-Leeds bias. Refereeing and VAR can be improved all you want but so long as that bias exists it’s not going to be a level playing field.BlackHillsPaul wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 4:45 pm VAR is one area where the Premier League could really learn from we Americans. We absolutely know how to do video replay. Our Professional Referee Organization (PRO) is outstanding. it was developed in conjunction with MLS to raise the level of our match officials and to develop VAR. Former Premier League and FIFA Referee Howard Webb was hired take on the job. He was smart enough to leverage all of the resources available to him from our other sports that ALL USE VIDEO REPLAY to develop VAR for use in MLS. And it's been very successful.
I might note that Howard Webb will be leaving PRO at the end of the year to take a similar role with PGMO, Englands Professional Game Match Officials, Ltd. Let's hope he can help raise the standard of Match Officials and VAR in English Football.

I know from previous posts that you don’t hold with any such bias claims but from my 55+ years of watching and supporting this club I, personally, am convinced such a thing exists. There have even been books written about that very topic.
By the way, it is also very obviously present in our mainly London based MSM too.
I’m not looking for excuses but, to me, there were 3 deciding factors for our defeat today:
A) the performance of Ivan Toney, fantastic player who was superb.
B) the performance of our defence mainly Diego Llorente who had a shocker.
C) the partiality of the referee and VAR

I always insisted we should never have got rid of Pontus, he has more fire in his belly than Llorente will ever have.
White, Coops & Pontus would have been a great three in championship plus two of them would still be at Leeds.

I doubt Toney would have moved out of London to play for Leeds, also suspect we never even considered him.

We both adopt a similar attitude Jay, better to laugh about football & life in general rather than let things get to us. It has been such a scary, horrible few months for Jill & I over the last few months, it puts life in perspective for me!

Marsch confirms what we had already worked out with the one in and one out policy - with a squad as limited as ours propped up by low paid under 23 players that really is disgraceful from an owner who apparently thinks we can get European football. Clearly he can’t afford to properly fund a premier league side and the 49ers don’t seem willing to put anything in with the current structure either.
I’d love for us one day to have an owner with some money but it’s just never going to happen.

It was clear today that the ref did not want to give the penalty against us, but Darren England on VAR persisted in pushing it - for at least 3 minutes in the refs’ ear.
