Match Thread Manchester United v Leeds United Match Thread - Dallas at left back, Koch in for Phillips

Post by Ellandback1 »

Saturday 14th August 12:30pm | Old Trafford

Junior Firpo will miss Saturday lunchtime's War of the Roses clash at Old Trafford. The £13m signing from Barcelona missed the games against Ajax and Villarreal with a slight knock. Stuart Dallas will deputise. Club Captain Liam Cooper will start at centre back alongside either Struijk. Llorente picked up an injury last month against Real Bettis. It is likely to keep the Spanish International sidelined for a few weeks.

According to @LUFCfanzone…

Diego has a leg muscle injury which will take 2-3 weeks to heal. It’s not major but he probably won’t be ready for the start of the PL season.

Jamie Shackleton too, is on the treatment table. A nasty clash of heads during the 4-0 Ajax defeat saw the 22 year old substituted. Inspirational midfielder Kalvin Phillips will also miss out following his England heroics earlier in the Summer, Robin Koch will slot into the holding midfield role. It will be interesting to see which youngsters make the bench this season! Cresswell, Dramah, Summerville, Greenwood and of course Joe Gelhardt have all impressed lately but will it be enough? Exciting new signing Lewis Bate will also be looking for game time following his £1.2m transfer from Stamford Bridge.

Fernandes, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof all returned to action against Everton last weekend and should start against Bielsa's side! New signing Raphael Varane will miss out, his registration delayed after having to isolate following his move from Real Madrid. Jadon Sancho too is unlikely to start for the Reds. He only joined up with his team mates for the first time on Monday.

Dean Henderson and Jesse Lingard have both been ruled out with Covid related illnesses whilst Rashford and Telles are long term absentees. Cavani, Bailly and Diallo are all resting having taken part in the Olympics for their respective Countries!

Bittersweet feeling for me in this game. On one hand can't wait for the season to start, especially against the sworn enemy. On the other I fear a poor pre-season, injury to Llorente, and no quality CM transfers could see us being a bit humbled. Will be pleased to compete and not give up 6 goals like last season. At leas tit's the first game of the season and we might find ManU a bit ring-rusty.

Bielsa PC

Llorente and Firpo?

Firpo is available and Lllorente isn't.

[How long on Llorente?]

Subject to evolution, but one or two more weeks.

No Llorente is a huge blow, not so confident now

Certainly is a huge blow Cjay, it was a turning point last season when Llorente played in our final twelve games our defence significantly improved.

I was truly hoping the combination of Llorente/Struijk would continue especially against that lot on Saturday.

But a huge blow and we are far weaker defensively for it.

With Llorente starting we conceded less than a goal a game in the league, without him it was far more.

Agreed, but still not the end of the world...part of football dealing with injuries ...

It is part of football, but we struggle when we are without Llorente or Phillips & I suspect would be the case if Bamford or Raphinha were missing for a sustained period too!

Yes adapt but we need :

Cooper to step up to the level of Llorente, not Coops fault but it's not gonna happen....maybe Koch when he has played a few games in his natural position.

Koch did well v Spurs at ER but he hasn't been entirely convincing when replacing Kalvin, as Faaip says Robin is still learning that role.

Not many work harder than Bamford in the team, Rodrigo certainly doesn't but his class could give us the goals required if Paddy absent. I don't see too many goals from Roberts at this level.

Raphinha, irreplaceable in that position as he is different class, Costa is hopeless & the kids are not ready yet!

No we're not. Koch is as good and how we wailed when we lost him last season.. There's zero step down to Koch/Struijk from Llorente/Struijk. It wasn't jus Llorente that contributed to the better defensive effort. We got better through time and familiarity too.

Expecting:

Meslier

Ayling Koch Coops Firpo

KP

Klich Dallas

Raph Paddy Harrison

Not confident with this one - but also don't think it will be a reflection on how we will do this season if we do lose, just a tough opener and expect us to get better through the season as per last year

Yep kind of figuring that myself for the opener ... Personally full of confidence... but you are right either will not be a reflection on the remainder of the season ... need at least 5 games in to start predicting that ...

If that's the case with Cooper & Koch starting, Pascal would be very unlucky to be dropped as he has already proved his worth in the 2nd part of last season, been decent in pre-season friendlies too!
