Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Monday 17th January) - Harrison hat-trick destroys Hammers

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Monday 17th January, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Harrison hat-trick destroys Hammers

Leeds produced their best performance of their injury ravaged season, as justice was served at the London Stadium, in front of 60,000 shell shocked fans. Having been defeated in controversial circumstances seven days prior, Leeds were keen to avenge the injustice, and deservedly took an early lead. Ayling's long ball found Raphinha deep on the right wing. He tee'd up Klich on the edge of the area, but his first time effort was well saved by Fabiański. Forshaw retrieved the loose ball, and rolled it back to Harrison, who blasted the ball through a sea of Claret and Blue to take a 10th minute lead.

West Ham struck back twelve minutes before half-time, as Bowen headed them level from a corner. The scoreline would only remain level for a few minutes, as the visitors retook the lead from a corner of their own. Ayling's flick-on was bundled in from closer range by Harrison as the Whites took an unlikely lead at the break.

The hosts took advantage of Leeds poor start to the second half, and drew level o 52 minutes. Pablo Fornals was given the time and space to weave his way into the Leeds penalty area before slotting the ball past the despairing diving of Meslier. Leeds have now conceded 13 times before the 46th - 60th minute, five more than any other team. In reply, Leeds have scored four!

Leeds were not to be denied. With an hour on the clock, Raphinha sliced open West Hams defence with an inch perfect pass to Harrison. Alert to the danger, Fabiański rushed out to try and deny the Leeds winger of his first ever hat-trick, but to no avail. He clipped the ball past the on rushing keeper to send the 5000 travelling fans delirious with joy.

Both teams had goals chalked off in the second half for offside, though Leeds fans will feel aggrieved that Klich's effort was disallowed, as Rodrigo was not interfering with play. Bowen missed a guilt edged effort to draw level, in the dying seconds, but Bielsa's men more than deserved their three points.

Leeds are 9 points clear of the drop zone. Can they afford to wait until the Summer transfer window opens?

Injuries to Forshaw and Firpo took the edge off their astounding victory yesterday, and although Rodrigo looks to be on the mend, he will find it difficult to replicate Forshaw's contributions in defensive midfield. With Phillips sidelined until March, Forshaw was showing he was more than an adequate replacement for the England midfielder. The hamstring injury will be assessed today, but we shouldn't expect the 30yo to be back in action anytime soon!

Firpo too tweaked his hamstring, though without a replacement, Dallas will have to cover, which if this happens, will weaken the Leeds midfield further. The other option would be to play Harrison at left back, and allow James to occupy left wing. Leeds are now nine points clear of the drop zone. Will the hierarchy gamble that they do not need to add to the squad until the Summer? There are two weeks of the transfer window remaining. If survival is the only thing that matters this season, do they need to bring players in this month?

VAR was right to rule it out - Clattenburg

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has insisted that VAR was right to rule out Klich's goal yesterday at the London Stadium. Whilst Social Media lit up with Leeds fans complaining about what they saw as an injustice, Clattenburg turned to his column in the Daily Mail to give his thoughts:-

Leeds thought they had made it 4-2 until VAR brought it back to 3-2 and the officials were right to do so. When Mateusz Klich smashed his shot towards goal, Rodrigo was standing in an offside position. The ball hit him on its way in, and so it was a clear offence. It isn’t a subjective decision, it is black and white and VAR was right to rule it out.

Good morning all

A major concern if Forshaw & Firpo could be long-term injuries, though it does seem we have cover for Junior with the surprise arrival of Leo Hjeldi.

Our squad numbers are diminishing game by game, you couldn't write it folks!

Time for a couple of loan signings to bolster our squad, certain players can't be rested due to all our injuries.

Feel really sorry for Klich as for the first time in ages he struck his shot sweetly only for the ball to graze Rodrigo who knew nothing about it to be fair

Brilliant hattrick for Jack, loved his dinked third goal, last season he'd have hit the ball straight at the keeper, class finish.

Now we have an unexpected nine points cushion, onwards & onwards to increasing our points total v the barcodes on Saturday.

Wasn't Rodrigo's arm offside anyway? They shouldn't be counting arms since you can't use them.

I did say relying on Forshaw was ridiculous, as it was always likely he'd be injured at some point.

I'd think 3 will do: Ola Aina (loan), CM, Striker. Happy for all 3 to be loans, unless we can find some good players this month.

Can't expect Bamford to stay fit all season and James is not a striker.

Hopefully Koch is at DM, now Llorente's back, and Hjelde is at LB on Saturday.

Looking at these stats, hopefully we'll score a few in the last 15 minutes against Newcastle!

In some ways, thank goodness we have had these injuries. It's the only way Bielsa has discovered Struijk and Hjelde

I don't expect us to get any players in , 2 wins on the trot, why do we need anyone !!
Pulling away from relegation slowly but surely, I know it's only papering over t' cracks, but it will save the owners a small fortune.

Quite unusual for a ref/ex ref to say VAR was correct and LU fans are wrong, the injustice of it all is something we have already got used to so"f**k you very much"

2 more injuries.....well, can't say a lot really that hasn't already been said, it is was it is and we have to put up with it, no point bothering about it, forshaw is the future so wont be replaced, firpo, can't work him out just yet, looks either very unlucky or simply don't like the British weather.

Superb performance by all including the fans at the game. Just need to beat the barcodes and we’ll be virtually safe already. What a difference a couple of weeks make eh

Loans cost anything up to 10 M, we're not going down so we can afford to wait til the summer to add at better value.

Dream midfield signing is Brenden Aaronson, but I worry other clubs will want him come the summer and it doesn't look like we could get him now.

I think it would be very dangerous to just assume we will survive now.

A quick count up of pur points total against the sides we have left to play gives us 12 points (then we have Villa and Liverpool to play again as they were postponed).

If we repeated those 12 points we would only get 34 points which is enough to see you relegated or at the very least bottom 4 and teetering.

We arent safe yet and we still have a wafer thin squad.

It would be massively risky to just assume that that 1 good performance will turn round our season and we will sale away from relegation.

We need players in and that hasnt changed and it would be a huge risk to do nothing this January.

If anyone did come in it doesn't just need to be the right player - it needs to be one that is not likely to get injured between now and the end of the season.

Look at the recent record of signings ;

Roberts - was out longterm soon after he was signed.
Forshaw - the same
JKA - not fit when we signed him.
Llorente - out for long periods after he was signed.
Koch - has hardly played until very recently due to long term injury after being signed.
Rodrigo - only available spasmodically since being signed due to injuries and Covid
Firpo - out with an injury for first half of the season after being signed. Comes back for a few games and is now injured again.

I think only James has remained fit after being signed. How does Victor Orta do it ?

So a ball hits another one of our players on the goal line unsighted and with him trying his best to get out of the way whilst not impinging on play in any shape or form. You would hope the fourth official would be able to use discretion and assess the situation in a situation like that. Imagine if we lost 3-2 to that disallowed goal. Its pathetic to rob a player of a goal like that, not only has we got to beat the keeper, the defender, now we have to beat our own striker on the goal line aswell. :shhh:

I am beginning to think we are cursed with Injuries. 2 More niggly hamstring injuries to contend with thankfully we will have Llorente back and we now know young Bate can step in and help out if required. I was impressed with the lad. I think he just needs to keep thing simple in his mind and he will be ok. Maybe he could call Batty for some advice?

Beat The Magpies and all we will all be out on the Toon.

Me too Cjay.

I remembe quite a few years ago when Steve Coppell was manager of Chrystal Palace. They were 7th from bottom and seemed safe. A lot of the clubs below them had difficult away games so weren't expected to win those. Guess what, they did win and Palace got relegated. Steve Coppell was so shocked that he resigned.

I won't settle until its mathematically impossible for us to be relegated.

It isn't a matter of discretion as once it hits Rodrigo it is no goal as he is offside.

If Rodrigo had managed to get out of the way of the shot then it would be up to the ref/var to decide if he was interfering with play.
