Premier League Postponed- LUFC vs Manure Postponed - That's killed our forum until October!!!

Post by Cjay »

The Premier League made the decision to cancel the match week for this weekend and our game on Monday vs Forest in honour of Her Majesty.

Effectively football as a whole was cancelled with even grassroots football cancelled.

Meanwhile many other events have gone ahead with tributes and a minutes silence for The Queen.

A backlash against the cancellation has occurred with people like Piers Morgan and Gary Neville pointing out that football with the volume of people who would have been present for matches that would have provided the best opportunity for people to show respect and honour The Queen.

Black armbands, periods of silence, likely God Save The Queen would have broken out even if not planned.

Tens of thousands of people in places all over the country showing respect and honouring the late Monarch.

But Football in trying to show respect and whatnot has dropped a bit of a clanger and missed a great opportunity.

Whenever it resumes I am sure the above will occur anyway but it won't hold the same reverence a week, 2 weeks, quite possibly even a month after the death of Queen Elizabeth 2nd.

Which brings us to the question of just when will it resume?

In theory we play Manchester United next weekend, but the funeral will likely occur within the next 7-10days and that will of course mean cancellations.

And after that is an international break and so it's entirely possible we won't play again till the beginning of October, almost exactly 1 month after The Queen passed away.

So obviously tributes won't be as poignant as they would have been days later.

But also when exactly do they fit in these missed matches?

Because of the winter World Cup the Season is already compact.

There isn't a huge amount of room to squeeze in postponed fixtures.

So when will they do it?

And should the Football have been postponed?

I’ve already commented a fair bit on this and believe it is a badly thought out decision on many fronts with the main one being (as you suggest above) that any tribute is far more meaningful if it’s done straight away.
It’s a real shame as it would of been a great platform on which a lot of fans would like to have honoured an incredible person.
Virtually all sports have just got on with it, as the Queen would have done. A huge error.

I agree with your thought process Cjay. This weekends matches would have been a great platform for the Nation to honor and show its respect for the Queen. We Americans have had times when we grieved together as a Nation. The aftermath of September 11, 2001 comes to mind. One of the things that helped to heal us was our sporting events. The chance to come together and grieve as a Nation. To honor those that had fallen. To wave the flag a bit and remember what it means to be an American. There were no politics. No division. Just one Nation. And it was glorious.

Clearly the scenarios are different. But from my view over here in the Black Hills of South Dakota where we honor some of our greatest Presidents on Mount Rushmore, this feels like a missed opportunity. Because it seems to me that the Monarchy is part of what make all of you British. And Queen Elizabeth II set the standard. She will be missed!

Yup, I'm about 12 miles/19km from there. It's still a gambling and entertainment town. One of the few municipalities in the United States where Casino Gaming is legal. it's a Wild West version of Las Vegas. 8-)

Ridiculous.

No thought of the thousands put out by this.

The show of respect would have been massive at all games and beamed around the world.

This sadly will just be a footnote.

No football whatsoever.
No Leeds games
Transfer window closed.

Is it any wonder the cancellations had an adverse effect on this forum.

A few days off will do us no harm.
Many of us were running out of angles to criticise Radz and co anyway.

Normal service will be resumed soon 😜

As sad at it is re the passing of a great human being, the media has gone way over the top, even more so than the football chiefs, you can't watch tv for hearing about it, you can't listen to radio for it. Total over kill in MHO, Why do they do it ? Is it because they respected her so much, or simply, it's easy jounalism (sp) for them

The broadcasters and newspapers have been preparing for the Queen's demise for years. They have loads of "tribute" content in the bank, all ready to air. It's an easy and cheap way to fill their schedules.
When Nelson Mandela died the BBC didn't shut up about it for a week. So the Queen's passing will easily eclipse that.

Ffs

Premier League have created a ludicrous situation for themselves.

Last weekend should have gone ahead with THIS weekend suspended.

Not both.
