Carling had very few opportunities at Leeds, after joining them from local club Dawson Payne and Elliott in November 1956. Leeds were always well served in the goalkeeping department and he understudied Royden Wood, Alan Humphreys and Tommy Younger before the emergence of Gary Sprake and he left for Lincoln City in July 1962. He made his debut on 12th September 1962 in a 6-2 home win over Newport County in a Fourth Division game. He played ninety-nine games at Sincil Bank, including eighty-four in the League before playing his final match for them on 29th April 1964 in a Fourth Division 3-0 win at home against Barrow, before moving to Walsall in June 1964. Again he was an almost ever-present choice, playing one hundred and one League games, before Chester City signed him in December 1966. He made his debut at Valley Parade on 10th December 1966, as Chester won 3-2 in an away win over Bradford City. He was a model of consistency and again was virtually an ever-present in his time at Sealand Road. He helped Chester reach the Welsh Cup Final against Cardiff City in May 1970, but otherwise there was never a chance for honours. He just kept on playing week-in, week-out, until he had amassed one hundred and ninety-nine League games, before leaving in June 1971 to join Non-League Macclesfield Town. He was later a milkman in Chester.
