Tyler Roberts giving the ball away followed by a Llorente foul and an uncharacteristic blunder from Illan Meslier lifted the Magpies to within a point of safety, and dented Leeds aspirations of climbing the table in the process. During a dire encounter, where both sides were as bad as each other, Raphinha's wizardry was evident for all to see. The Brazilian unselfishly carved out three or four opportunities for others, but without a goalscoring striker on the pitch, his efforts were in vain.

Leeds could have gone ahead early on in the first half. Rodrigo carved open the Toon defence with a diagonal ball deep inside the Newcastle penalty area. Raphinha cut the ball back to James, whose effort was well saved by Dúbravka at his near post. Newcastle looked dangerous from set pieces, and should have gone ahead before the break. Leeds failed to clear a corner, but Shelvey's volley was miraculously tipped around the post by Meslier.

The game looked like it was heading for a goalless draw until fifteen minutes from time. Llorente clattered Manquillo on the left edge of the area, gifting Newcastle a chance to deliver a dangerous ball into the box. Instead, Shelvey went for goal. His low curling effort bounced aver the despairing dive of Meslier before nestling in the far corner of the net. Clearly rattled, the Frenchman spilled a cross at his near post just minutes later which Llorente had to clear off the line. Even the introduction of Joe Gelhardt did nothing to lift Leeds spirits, but having already gone a goal down, and the clock ticking on, it was too little too late. 27% of Newcastle’s points won in the Premier League this season have come against Leeds.

Stewarding was excellent at St James Park last September in our 1-1 draw, as it always is on several visits there over the decades.
Should be an easy job for our stewards. Away fans surely have no energy for mischief by the time they've climbed all those steps.

for what it's worth, I think there should be a review of all stewarding. Too many places still treat away fans like 80s hooligans (our stewards included).

I don't doubt there may have been a couple of time-wasting sit downs but it wasn't as bad as is being made out.

Ironically, losing Dummett meant Manquillo came on and had a decent game. Lascelles took his '1 big mistake a game' with him. We might not have managed the game as well with them both still on the pitch.

This wasn't COVID stuff, it was barcodes on ticket stubs not being read properly by the readers, 5 turnstiles for 3,000 people, and the stewards and police not doing their jobs. Hope your club looks into it as it could have become very dangerous.

Didn't enjoy the rotation of your players going down like ninepins every ten minutes :(

We have a ready-made striker, however Bielsa refuses to use him from the start, unfair to give him just ten minutes in an attempt to rescue the game yet again, by that time Raphinha & Harrison had run themselves ragged.

Seems to be problems at many away ends due to covid checks this season, I always feel we are treated like a herd of cattle at stadiums on my travels. Unlike many fans I'm always in ER an hour before kick-off to avoid the stampede!

Thought for the first time this season, we grew into the match as the game wore on. Probably as much to you tiring, as anything else. Seen a few complaints about Saint Maximin diving? It's a stone wall penalty lads, c'mon. ASM is cutting back and your lad takes his standing leg. Accidental or otherwise, it's a pen.

That aside, I thought it was a good game, chances for both teams and while I think we edged it (I would), if you had an actual striker on the pitch I think the story would be very different.

As it stands, I think with a little investment, or getting some of your injured players back at least, you're in little danger of going down.

Some Newcastle fans are praising this win as the won that keeps us up. We're still 18th. Lets not start the open-top bus parade just yet.

As an aside, a lot of our lot are unhappy with the stewarding and access. Lads getting to Ellend Rd 30 minutes before kick off and, after a crush, got forced upstairs away from their seats by the stewards. Loads saying the barcodes on the ticket stubs weren't working properly, so 3,000 Geordies were trying to get through 5 turnstiles which weren't even working.

Is this a common issue, or just an aberration?

It was a good game overall. Our play in the final third was our undoing. I felt we played well enough to get a draw but credit where credit is due. Your lot did what counted and scored which is what you need to do to win, so no-one can say that you didn't deserve it.

I was particularly impressed by Schaer (hope I got the spelling right) who I thought was immense at the back for you.
