A window on the past

It’s not just me is it? But this transfer window seems exactly the same as every other transfer window in recent history. In fact we seem to be in exactly the same position as we were last season, outside the playoffs with fans questioning the future of our manager. Each window starts in the same way, full of hope and promise, those last few signings, those final pieces in the jigsaw and we could make a real push at promotion. After a few weeks though the signings don’t emerge, not unless you got overly excited about the permanent signing of Michael Tonge anyway.

Neil Warnock tells us that ‘Shaun Harvey is working hard behind the scenes’, I’m not quite sure what it is that Shaun Harvey does behind the scenes but very little of that time seems to be spent actually signing players. Echoes of Simon Grayson’s famous ‘Irons in the fire’ comments, irons that melted away, signings that never saw the light of day and something tells me it isn’t going to be any different this time. Then comes the unrest, the transfer request or the pimping out of our best player. Gradel, Howson, Snodgrass all lost in previous seasons, Becchio likely to depart this window, though perhaps at least not to Norwich.

It’s all so predictable, but this time it was supposed to be different. GFH were the saviours, Salem Patel and David Haigh ousting Bates and riding in with their Middle Eastern millions. But the hope is fading, fans loosing faith, those key signings to help us fight into the play offs nowhere to be seen. Alan Tate’s comments about our financial situation, probably sour grapes, don’t help to instil and optimism or confidence amongst the Leeds United faithful. So Mr Patel, Haigh and Harvey, you have three days left to make this transfer window different to all the others, let’s make them count.

not a sniff of a signing, either NW or GFH are playing thier cards close to the chest or we just aint signing anyone,
we will find out which in 48 hours time.
I will keep my fingers crossed hoping its the former rather than the later.

I am actually remaining positive for this window at the moment. Although it is near on closing, we may come out of it with a bit of sense to the madness. We have secured some good players at the start of the window, including Tonge and Hall. We have signed Byram on a long deal, which in previous seasons we would have cashed in on.

No one knows the full extent of the Becchio saga. He may want to leave, he may have been forced. At the end of the day, I do think it is being handled correctly for the future of the club. Warnock has said Becchio will not go anywhere if a replacement isn't found. If multiple bids have been rejected because of either low amounts or we want to hold onto him, surely this is a step in the right direction (providing the funds are put into the squad).

I will wait until the window is over to make up my mind, but if we do bring in a couple of players and Becchio leaves, I will be fine. If we hold onto Becchio, then I will be happy also.

This window will make up my mind on the new owners, but its not about how much they spend on players, it's about how deal with all the player transfer nonsense. So far in my opinion, only positives have come from this window. January is a time when clubs want to hold onto players, at least the decent ones and they will only come at a cost. Usually a stupid cost.

So my concern isn't bringing in a bucket load of players. I have said it a thousand times, but we have a squad capable for promotion. Maybe only promotion and not the PL, but its where we need to start. You don't defeat 3.5 PL clubs, playing decent football, with a crap team.

My concerns so far are being met positively by the club, including signing young Sam for a decent amount of time.

Only  so far from me.

Perhaps we should start sampling the products of our own bakery
