Here's a post that all you lot who hate me can get your teeth into. Reach for that 'Report' button and get me banned! Go on, you know you want to.
Saka is a very good footballer, and there is no question that he is World Cup material. Last night's game came alive whenever he got the ball. The dog fell asleep. Then, just as the dog was snoring loud enough to wake the cows in the fields and I drifting off too, Saka got the ball and it was like an electric jolt. Oh wait, England's only world class player has got the ball. Something might happen now.
But here's the thing: Saka is not English. He could be the best player in the world and guarantee us trophies, but he will never be English, so it's all cynical and fake.
I am one of Daniel Defoe's True Born Englishmen, I have a bit of something in me from different parts of the British Isles, but I am an Englishman. Yet I wanted England to lose last night. It's not that I enjoyed watching France beat us, and I certainly wouldn't tolerate it from the Germans, but that was only a team called England. It's not the real England. Sorry, some of those players are not English.
Bukayo Saka is Nigerian. He was born in England, but he is not English or European. Why isn't he playing for Nigeria?
Maybe another ethnic white European who has assimilated, a Frenchman or German, or Canadian, or New Zealander, etc. who has been brought up in England, or has genuine ties to England or Britain, could regard England as his first loyalty. That I can potentially accept or condone as a one-off now and then. It should only be allowed reluctantly, after dour committee meetings in which old men in dark suits mutter and grumble before a crusty old chairman with a broad Lancashire accent says, 'Well, we don't like Germans really, but I suppose we can make an exception on this occasion, but I'm really not sure about it all....Well anyway...very well'
An Irishman, Scotsman, Ulster-Scotsman, Welshman, etc.. Fine, some prefer to play for England. That's acceptable or condonable.
But a black African is not an Englishman and never can be and never will be if we sat here for a hundred years. It just is what it is. He is disqualified from consideration
ab initio. Is that fair? Of course not, but life isn't fair. Some things are supposed to be beyond money, ability and connections. One of those things should be nationality, which should be based on ancestry and ethnicity.
I find it difficult to 'feel' anything when I watch England play because the team includes black Africans who are only 'British' by legislative fiat. It's not that I dislike black Africans. I neither like nor dislike them. It's a matter of wanting to see my own nation play on an honest basis, win or lose. I prefer to lose with a team of mediocre Englishman who give it their all and even make me cry, rather than win with some bought and borrowed team that effectively amounts to a Premier League Star XI.
It's one thing to have the odd player like John Barnes or Paul Ince. It's not ideal, but I can turn a blind eye to that. John Barnes played two of the greatest games I have seen from an England player: one against Brazil, the other against Argentina in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final. I despise those England fans who mocked him, whether due to racism or otherwise. Paul Ince was a great player, in my opinion. But neither were Englishman - unfortunately. I could rouse myself for Paul Ince, though, because he was a blood and guts player. You could see it in his eyes, his facial expressions, he put everything he had into every minute of every game he wore an England shirt.
But Paul Ince isn't English. I loved him, and I would have him play for England any day of the week, but it's cynical to pretend that he is something that he isn't.
A talented young player like Saka ought to feel proud that he's Nigerian and should want to play for Nigeria. Nigeria should have the benefit of his talent and he should be playing for them in the World Cup and scoring against England!
The situation has now come to a head, in my opinion. Nobody discusses it because it's not politically-correct, but it should be discussed. It's fake, false and cynical and this is my protest against it!
Now, if you want to ban me, go ahead. I will not 'take the knee', and no man wearing an England shirt should ever kneel to anybody.
If I'm still a member of this Forum tomorrow, I may post some reasons why I think we play badly and why we lost last night.
