Both were immense tonight.

We struggled the first 30. Looked like we had against Huddersfield. Key save from Mez made a big difference.

In fairness you're always going to have that in an away game. You have to take a couple of early punches. Then quieten down the opposition and the crowd.

After that we were completely in control. We were in control long before the goal. I think Rutter had 3 chances in that period.

Once we scored the Wendies didn't have an answer. They had to be a bit more open and expansive. That made space for us and made it easier for us to keep attacking them. The 2nd goal was always coming and after that it was never in doubt.

They came at it a bit later. But we were always in control.

Credit Bamford who showed why he doesn't get replaced. The goal was one thing - the way he held off the defender and made the flick for the 2nd was an even better moment than his goal.

It does get frustrating at times when we're playing against a tight defense. Gruev and Kamara don't do much to break them down. But once it opened up, they became much more of a threat.

But again Joseph came on and after first winning the ball in defence moves up the other end and sets up Roberts who almost scores ... Much better game from Paddy than of late but he did disappear at times.. for 40 minutes in the first half

I'm startin to wonder if we should just start Firpo on the LW and get shut of him altogether out the defence.

Exactly, Andrew. This time of year, against this type of team, it's about holding your nerve, minimizing mistakes, and taking your chances when offered. No small feat with a team this young. Credit to DF and the players for picking up what he's been putting down.

A great example, from a single play, of Joseph's abilities and attributes that we were talking about after the last match. His work to win the ball in our half, making the hard pass with defenders all around him, and still hustling back to do what he did at the other end. Don't think he's ready to start over Paddy (although he could in a pinch), especially give the streak Paddy has been on in terms of goals/starts, but so great to see Joseph making the most of his chances.

Firstly the TV cameras were drumming up Szmodics as a top goalscorer, then Whittaker at Plymouth, tonight it was Ugbo's turn. All three come up against Rodon & Ampadu & don't get a kick, let alone a goal.

Joseph up top instead of Paddy, our No.9 who has scored 8 goals in 11 games, a strikers finish tonight & a great lay-off to Rutter for Gnonto's goal.

He must have been complete dogsh1t lately then, because he was at best a passenger in this game .

The lad himself looked devastated at some of the chances that went begging for him tonight.

The Owls ran out of ideas, lack of quality & tired legs was evident in the end.

Let's face it, Meslier only had one save to make.

Regarding Bamford. At this point in the season you don't experiment. You go with the guy that has 134 goals over the promising youngster that has 2. As we keep saying, Bamford's game is about so much more than the goals. He puts in a great deal of work that goes unnoticed. A few were saying he was anonymous in the first half. He was running tirelessly along that front line, constantly making himself available and we weren't advancing the ball. He's learned a lot about positioning over the years. The lay off for the 2nd showed great experience.

I'm totally in favour of Joseph getting more game time. But you have to start Bamford for the remaining games of this season.

I'm in favour of Ampadu in midfield. But I'm only going to suggest it when Strujik is fully fit. I feel that Ampadu offers more of a threat going forward than Gruev. What I do like to see in the current set up is Ampadu moving into midfield when we go forward. Gruev can easily pivot and drop behind. Ampadu is the center back. But he can offer more of a threat than Gruev. So I think they should play that pivot a bit more often.

Agreed...on all counts, Andrew. Locky just had a video on this very argument he posted yesterday. In particular, the part about the right match at the right time (i.e., game state) in terms of Joseph's development seems key. Not to mention Paddy's insane starts to goals ratio

I'm guessing we're going to be seeing an improving Summerville in the next few games. He's been a touch subdued last three or four but got into the game more today. Great save prevented a goal but it was an improvement
