Read two of your back and forth posts. Scrolled down and it had that Tolkien look again. At which point I reached for a strong drink and scrolled to the end.
My guess is neither came out on top and the 111th book in the series will be along shortly.

I'll be on a train between Carbondale, Illinois and Chicago during the game. I'm recording it and will watch the replay when I get home.
Enjoy, the last home game, everyone. Particularly jealous of those of you who will be at ER.

Daniel Farke had to abandon farkeball and now he plays the new improved FARKEBALL.
Let's just call it development and evolution and tactical adaption, like a manager not stuck in his ways would react.

To be fair on Tolkien it took me less time to read Lord of the Rings

Re: Leeds vs Brighton Match Thread
I feel your view is clouded by how things were in the championship. Liek you say we were the better team so that usually meant teams simply sitting back against us - as such that often dictated how we played, our tempo etc. I doubt 'ploddyball' as you put it was exactly what Farke wanted but when you play against parked bus teams every week it often ends up where you are simply playing the ball around without any pressure hoping to drag an opposition player out of position. Often it has been the same way for Man City, despite the quality of their players, and yesterday a prime example as they had loads of possession but didn't create much.Cjay wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2026 7:53 pm It's bit counter attack I agree, all be it we do sit back a bit at times.
But it isn't the same style DF uses generally.
He's a possession dictate play build from the back type coach, the Championship was his way.
Until Man City was more his way, after was more a style for the profile we signed for.
Get it forward quickly and fight for second balls and stuff.
The Championship squad was progressive as you say but also very comfortable on the ball and generally more gifted than their opponents.
If that is what DF wants to do going forward then I don't think it would go well.
As you say Pep can do it he has the luxury of player quality
We won't have, it took Brighton 4 seasons I think it was before they made it work and they floated with relegation before that numerous times.
I quite like the more direct style tbf, I don't like possession for the sake of it football (I don't like what Pep has become).
I'd be happy to be flexible but I'd be very concerned if we tried to become a purely possession side.
DF has done well this season with something different, I see no reason to go back to his style which as yet is unproven at best at the top level.
So for me it was always going to change this season simply because teams were more likely to have a go at us as we were no longer the 'big fish.' However changing completely how we played was never going to be a case of going from one way to a completely different way but evolving, adapting etc. Sometimes what we were used to worked, against Everton and West Ham, but then we struggled against teams with a much higher press than we were used to, Brighton, Arsenal, Man City etc. So that becomes the point where we become a bit more direct, mix it up a bit more, play it long to DCL and look for the second ball more often. After that it was a bit of a meshing of styles - certainly we don't have a side that can blow teams away with just one style - what worked v City 2nd half, and then against Chelsea, got ruthlessly exposed v Liverpool - until we changed back to a way we were used to.
So whilst Farke would prefer possession etc I wouldn't think that his ultimate way of playing is the 'ploddyball' version that we saw at times in the championship but more the version which sees the wingbacks marauding and interchange of players - almost Bielsa like but with probably less risk.

Re: Leeds vs Brighton Match Thread
Like I say that's where the Venn diagram comes in and hopefully as we start to sepnd more we get the players that fit in. An example might be the midfielder that Sunderland bought for a few million more than we were prepared to pay. It might have been that he fitted the Venn diagram more than someone we signed but we weren't prepared to spend the extra money so we get more of a compromise signing, maybe fitted say 3 out of 5 categories that Farke wanted and say 3 out of of 5 that the recruitment team wanted. So hopefully going forward we get players that fit better whether that is us spending more or the recruitment team getting better at identifying cheaper 'unknown' players like Brighton etc have excelled in.Cjay wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2026 8:06 pm But if the manager wants a player to fit style X and the data/recruitment team want Y who wins? Getting a player able to do both equally well is likely well above our level financially.
That's where issues arise.
If a manager doesn't align with the style the club wants and the players are signed for then problems occur.
Likewise if the club signs players who don't fit the style the manager wants problems arise.
So somebody has to have the final say on profile.
If the manager dictates the style and thus the signings, would you be comfortable allowing DF to build a squad for his possession based style? With respect it hasn't served him well at the top level before so what if it doesn't work? Your stuck with players signed for a style that hasn't worked and may not be able to adapt to a new manager and new style?
Or what if it does work and Farke leaves mid season for a new job and we can't find a manager willing or able to come in and play the same style?
That's the reason clubs like Brentford operate how they do, it stops situations like that occurring.
I don't think a manager can be allowed full control imo, you never know how a manager will work out or if it goes well and they leave then you lose everything and have to rebuild.
You give them a say (which DF has) but never full control
If the club dictates the criteria its a permanent and probably better long term business wise (which I imagine appeals to our owners).
Teams and players adapt. Like I mentioned in regards to Bielsa most of the players he inherited at Leeds would have been alien to his style of playing yet he moulded them. The key though is probably to go for a similarish coach so as to avoid the mistakes of the past where we went from Tomas Christiansen's continental way of playing to Heckingbottoms, get stuck in direct way, to Bielsa. Or even Bielsa to Marsch which wasn't anywhere near as similarly aligned as Orta seemed to think.

Just to clarify you are recording the game, rather than the train journey - asking for a friend who wears a Mac, carries a notebook, flask and sandwich box. He can often be found at Victoria station searching for platform 9 and 3/4’s.John in Louisiana wrote: ↑Sun May 17, 2026 1:14 am I'll be on a train between Carbondale, Illinois and Chicago during the game. Looks an unbalanced line up with James playing RWB again where he was poor last time out. Bornauw for Struijk.
Chadwick for Chambers is strange unless Chambers is injured...

“Leeds are safe, but Monday nights game at Tottenham shows that they are yet to get the sandals out of the loft. I'm reliably informed by Tom Carnduff that the players are on a hefty bonus depending on how high they finish in the league, so that is a lovely bit of extra motivation - alongside derailing Brighton's European push”.
Standard stuff I suppose.

Lot of square pegs round holes in that.
James presumably wing back again despite being awful last time
Justin playing left side.
Bornauw left sided cb
Aaronson playing up top.

Be interesting to see how well we start, not started well in recent games until Farke rebalances and we're much better last 30 minutes or so....
I'd have played Byram on the left, Justin in his strongest position. We have no Struijk replacement, we know Bijol and Rodon can't play left side.
I'd imagine Aaronson will play wider or in a 4 man midfield rather than purely up top

It is you who make the round holes and fit the square pegs in them. That is not Fake's formation at all.
