That involves talking about the players and style we had before he came, inevitably, but the only person hijacking the thread and trying to make it about Bielsa's sacking is you.
No sara it isn't, you only need to go back 1 page to see the bielsa bollocks, never mind the whole lot.
Nearly every thread / post IS HIJACKED by the bielsa bunnies or the trolls, relating his EX-team to the new regime, belittling and undermining everything JM is trying to do.
As I've put elsewhere, I don't think JM really is the future of LUFC, but, he's only just arrived, so, I'm prepared to give him the opportunity, which is a lot more than the bielsa luvvies are willing to give him, don't forget, he has inherited a s**t team geared for only one way, but hey, don't let the truth get in the way of a good narrative eh.

I'm not totally convinced that Jesse is the answer in the future.

Good motivator.

He starts with a clean slate, hopefully a better squad, all will be revealed this summer.

Communicates with his squad, prepared to put his arm around the players when confidence is low.

Found a way of achieving results, even though our style of play was by no means great.

Prepared to play our best young players.

15 points from 12 matches is an average of 1.25 per game, had we achieved that average throughout the season we would have finished on 48 points.

Four victories since his arrival in March, compared to Marcelo's five wins in seven months.

Even though our defence appeared as wobbly as a jelly, we conceded only 19 goals in his 12 games as opposed to conceding 60 goals in our previous 26 games.

Going from the facts I've presented above, I would say Jesse has improved us as a much more solid team.

I'm hoping for a mid-table finish next season & let's see how we progress in the following years, whether it's under Marsch or another coach.

Hi Jesse ... can we go back to wingers next season?

He is ..motivated Ayling and James off the pitch via reckless yellow cards

I would put the blame on Luke & Dan's shoulders on that issue.

I wouldn't, we were way more reckless in the challenge under Marsch, even Dallas' tackle that ended in injury was out of character. It was a failing of Marsch that he wanted finesse players to play more physically.

BlackHillsPaul wrote: Mon May 23, 2022 8:45 pm Good post Cjay!! I always appreciate it when people take the time to offer some meaningful analysis. You have made some good points. I think it's too early to say that JM will be a pure disciple of anyone. His major mentors have been Bob Bradley and Ralf Rangnick. But he doesn't play exactly like either in my view. He has his own ideas. And has shown a willingness to change things over his first 12 matches at Leeds. Out of necessity/desperation no doubt. We will have to wait and see how exactly he wants his side to play next season.

Here is some food for thought. This is Jesse's first time outside of the Red Bull family of clubs since his very first season as a Manager in Montreal. Not having to play the "Red Bull way" may also allow him some creative license he might not have had in the past. I'm as interested as anyone to see how this plays out. Cheers!!!
I can't comment on Bob Bradley because I don't know much about him.

His style is definitely very close to Ralf Rangnick though.

The 4-2-2-2 formation, the way we press, the narrow formation and attacking vertical passing lines are all Ralf Rangnick tactics.

The short distances between the players etc.

It's textbook Rangnick.

Southampton do similar under Hasenhuttl (who actually is another warning sign really). Another Red Bull Rangnick man whose had very mixed results at Premier League level and has taken many many batterings.

Maybe as you say moving away from the Red Bull franchise will allow him to move away from that philosophy? But I doubt it.

Most managers stick with a philosophy for there whole career. The key though is adaption not abandon.

For me he will need to be more flexible because as Rangnick and Hasenhuttl have shown if you stick to close to that narrow style you will concede a lot of goals.

Bielsa had his blindspots, Marsch needs to not.

He needs to look at Tuchel and Klopp for example. They are two self confessed Rangnick disciples, you can see the influence in Klopp's team.

The pressing in packs, the fast vertical attacking passes, very much a Rangnick philosophy.

But Klopp allows width in attack.

Being more physical has worked to a certain degree, getting us the necessary results.

We were a soft touch for much of the season.

I really can't understand why folk are so down on a coach who has kept us up, in fact I'm shocked  it's so unlike Leeds fans.

All Leeds fans should be supporting our new coach, he ain't' done that badly, has he?

The situation we were in was far from his fault, the blames lies elsewhere!

weasel wrote: Mon May 23, 2022 10:17 pm Excellent post Cjay and the hope is that both our team and MU's were unable to adapt to tactics that may actually work but were sort of bad fits at the time. I doubt Klopp, Pep or Bielsa would have been able to do well at MU (admittedly they would all have done better than Rangnick).

The point about our hybrid team reminds me of a post I made recently asking whether performances had gotten worse over time under Marsch - basically had they got worse as we went more towards Marsch's tactics and away from Bielsa's. The Leicester performance, in Marsch's first match in charge, was probably our best performance under Marsch but wa salso our most Bielsa like performance. I do feel we then went more towards Marsch's preferred tactic but then edged back towards playing a bit more how we were used to hence the hybrid.

MU aren't a pressing side and players like Pogba, Fernandes and Ronaldo are used to other players doing the donkey work for them. It is hard to really read too mcuh into Rangniek's time there albeit it was shockingly poor.

Hopefully in our first match of next season we will see Marsch's tactics in full flow and it will blow us away like Bielsa's firs match, v Stoke, did.
I think you are right I think Marsch did try to implement his tactics early doors and actually that Marsch/Bielsa hybrid at Leicester worked very well.

Understandably he wanted to move closer to his own style though and it didn't work. That isn't his fault, we all know the squad wasn't suited to it and that was obvious to anyone except Orta who probably just got all excited when Marsch said "yeah I like to press and be aggressive off the ball".

Once that happened Orta phased out whilst Marsch explained the differences between he and Bielsa.

Rangnick was on a hiding to nothing at Manure as you suggest. His tactics were never going to work there with those overpaid lazy lumps. He is a very interesting and innovative man Ralf Rangnick, he is no fool.

People look at the Red Bull teams and admire them for there style and scouting and what not, that was Rangnick, he built that network similar to Bielsa in South America.

Rangnick is very similar to Bielsa.

A very intelligent and influential man and yet one whose probably a bit to intelligent and thinks of tactics thay are excellent if perfected but basically impossible to perfect.

Rangnick's ideas clearly work to a degree and that should give us hope regarding Marsch.

Klopp uses elements of them, Tuchel to, Julian Nagelsmann, Marco Rose, Adi Hutter, Oliver Glasner who won the Europa League with Frankfurt the other day.

Top coaches who would be candidates to take over most of the top jobs in Europe use elements of the same style Marsch uses.

So Marsch has the tools and the skeleton of a really effective and enjoyable to watch style (and its enjoyable as anyone who watches Liverpool or Dortmund or even Frankfurt the other day can see).

But he needs to do what those managers have done and adapt it slightly.

Same as Pep did with Bielsa.

He needs to take the best bits of what Rangnick teaches and use his own ideas or even Bielsa’s ideas and mould it into a more effective style.

If he can do that then no reason he can't be a success here imo.

Then we would have got all the "Bielsa would have saved us" garbage.

I'm truly shocked with it all, two days after our survival.

Probably because they read the nonsense the lazy pundits trot out. Like Keane saying Dyche would've saved Burnley, yet without the new manager bounce they'd have gone weeks ago.

Yes, a likely blessing in disguise I have to admit. I never want to see Dan James playing as a No.9 ever again.

Giving Greenwood is full debut was a brave move, though.

There is that .... But simpler to just pick Joffy and have James on the bench?

It does to most supporters, however, when you have people blaming JM for players red cards you just know what type your'e dealing with, then again, same person who rates roberts and still had him in his first 11, and keeps changing it, laughable.
Why don't these people go along to ER and voice their opinions to the board instead of telling us why the master was sacked unfairly :mshr: why it perfectly OK to concede 20 in a month and why it was just fine and dandy to have 5 wins in 26, it's not like other managers lose their jobs with that sort of record is it.

Rangnick would've been far more successful here. Getting Shaw and Maguire to press, given how unfit they are, was never going to work.
