who pays the players wages - the club so unless it is a world cup qualifying match which the team have a chance to win or draw then if the player is not 100% fit and the club are ok with it the player should not goPhoenixUnited wrote: ↑Tue Dec 02, 2025 9:42 am Many years ago we had the same kind of situation with the great Tony Yeboah. There was the George Graham factor in that there was a fall out with TY but he was working his way back from injury. Yeboah wanted to play, Graham wouldn't pick him with the excuse that the player was not fit enough (didn't fancy him in the starting line up more like!) so when the opportunity came Yeboah went off on international duty and came back injured (or maybe he didn't want to play for Graham). not really sure he played much after that before Yeboah shipped out.
My point is that players have (alledegly!) a brain and have the option to decline the invitation to turn up for international duty if they are not ready or not quite right. It becomes a question of their priorities. As a fan I have little sympathy with players that choose country over club but then I have an absolute vested interest. In reality it'd be a hard choice to make not to answer the call of your country

Indeed. And what with Wales being number one in the world at football & rugby who can blame him.PhoenixUnited wrote: ↑Tue Dec 02, 2025 9:42 am Many years ago we had the same kind of situation with the great Tony Yeboah. Re: Dan James- out till 2026
Most players consider it an honour to play for their country so will if given the choice and rules allow them to make that choice. Ryan Giggs didn't seem to want to play for Wales which made it easier, after all Beckham was never "injured" for England games. It's basically players choice if fit

Perhaps if players get injured on international duty then maybe the international FA equivalent should pick up the players wages until they are fit to play again. The Subhuman wrote: ↑Tue Dec 02, 2025 7:29 pm Most players consider it an honour to play for their country so will if given the choice and rules allow them to make that choice. Remember when Ferguson was manager at Scumchester. Almost every time internationals came along most of his players developed "niggles" and were not allowed to go. Always fit for the next League match though.

He's been of zero use to use so far this season.White Riot wrote: ↑Sun Feb 15, 2026 4:54 pm Getting to be a regular in the Forshaw Suite and we should have learned a few lessons already about selling at the right moment.
He's joining a long list of long term injury prone players who we have signed in the last 7 or 8 years.

We need players who are available and produce on the pitch, that's my expectation, and I'm not wedded to sentiment.

I like him too White - he did well for us in the championship, but he's never translated that kind of form to the PL.White Riot wrote: ↑Sun Feb 15, 2026 5:33 pm I like Dan Chapel, but that's not enough.

That other club offloaded him to us of course after we failed to sign him at the first time of asking. And now he's turning into another Bamford - we should have sold him after last season. We didn't learn from Harrison.

I think it's being prepared to sell at the right moment Chapel.CHAPELALLMAN wrote: ↑Sun Feb 15, 2026 5:43 pm I like him too White - he did well for us in the championship, but he's never translated that kind of form to the PL.

We could have got good money for Harrison, Bamford and Meslier, but will end up with nothing for them.
I'm certain that most of our fans would be outraged at the thought of selling DCL, when he's fit and scoring goals.
But, that's exactly when you need to sell him. It's more likely that the club would give him a pay rise and a long contract extension and then finds he reverts to being injured and unavailable and his value disappears.

I think you're right Riot - there's maybe a touch of naivety there in terms of our transfer wheelings and dealingsWhite Riot wrote: ↑Sun Feb 15, 2026 6:06 pm I think it's being prepared to sell at the right moment Chapel.

We could have had about £50m at one time for Bamford and Harrison.

Would you have sold Bamford after we'd just 9th and he'd just scored 16 PL goals though ?CHAPELALLMAN wrote: ↑Sun Feb 15, 2026 6:47 pm We could have had about £50m at one time for Bamford and Harrison.
Big decision to offload at that point with no other striker available to us.
Also we could have probably sold Meslier and Harrison at that point, plus what about Alioski who left on a free so where does it stop ?

Or DCL goes from strength to strength. I am not just on the same page, I am reading an entirely different book at a library 100 of miles away.White Riot wrote: ↑Sun Feb 15, 2026 6:06 pm I think it's being prepared to sell at the right moment Chapel.

Now if an offer comes in quoting silly money and we have someone lined up or coming through with significant talent then that is a different story. Which tends to happen with an established EPL club with a variety of options. We haven’t been anywhere near that position since we sold Jimmy Floyd H.
