Would imagine the £3m will mostly be made up by the amount of appearances he makes and if we stay up. As such if the fee rises to £15m it will likely have been worth it.

Maybe.

Lot of money for a non scoring non creating energy type 28 year old squad player though.

Should push Tanaka down to the bench one assumes... Shame, one of my favourite players for us ...

Exactly the type of player needed on which to consolidate and build sound footings going forward.
Do not try to run before you can walk, and this guy can run.
Not only will he be everyone's poty come season end, but his contribution of 100% commitment every single time he steps on the field to play, along with his determination to play thru any pain barrier just to be included in the matchday 11, then he alone could inspire his team mates game and thus in a way single-handedly concrete our first season back on which to build.
No need to argue, time will tell. But i feel/predict he will be the star next season in a season where we need to finish top of the bottom 6.
And yes, that is a successful season to take forward.

Batty was non scoring, non creating, not overly energetic.

I don't know enough about him. Seemed highly rated when he burst onto the scene a few years back and was scoring a few goals. Looks like a decent midfield battler who does have the abilitiy to chip in with a few goals. It's what we need though, we need s trong squad. I've made the point before that if we'd bulked up our squad then we'd have been more competitive piror to Bielsa's sacking as we would have been able to field a stronegr XI than we could and also not have had all the youngsetrs, and Tyler Roberts, on the bench.

£15m today is probably cheap these days for a prem squadfiller. Just the way it is with 'proven' prem player prices.

Batty was a 4, Longstaff plays further up. We have Ampadu to not score

Still think this is a good signing, adds something we definitely don't have.

Might be a lack of ambition, but we will find out when the window closes won't we!

Exactly. We need players that are going to scrap for everything and won't let their heads drop if the weather is bad and the team is struggling. It is about consolidation and trying to be come a stable premier league club and then in a few years time we try the 'gamble' signings. Stach might have a higher profile but is still more of a gamble than Longstaff, same for that Habib fella Sunderland signed. There is less risk/reward scenario with Longstaff - we know fairly much what we are getting - we need the 7/10 rating every week rather than someone getting 10 and then 4.

And no attacking mid? Won't that isolate the striker with no creativity in the middle of the park? I'm ok with an Amps/Tanaka pivot but I'd like an attacking mid to create and link play

Batty had a midfield around him that all chipped in with goals so that he didn't need to. He was the ball winner, a better player than many thought but happy to get the ball and let the others get the glory.

We haven't exactly been banging them in from the midfield positions over the last 2 years. Yes AO I think got 3 but that is about it for all our central midfielders over the last 2 years. Key would appear to be solid there so as to allow the wingers, and fullbacks, to be very attacking.

Longstaff, advanced eight, pushes forward.

Most of our creativity will come from out wide again.

Fair post.

Not knocking the signing just know what my Geordie mates said and think it's a lot of money is all.
