But i just don't get it though
.
In early december he started and scored a great goal in the win against chelsea. He then came on and scored the equaliser in the draw against Liverpool. It seemed like at this point he was playing well and with confidence.
He then started in an away draw against Brentford and that was his last league start for about 4 months till the Manchester United game!
In the next 7 games he came on as substitute.
In the next 7 games he sat on the bench as an unused substitute in a run of only one win and 6 goals. That must have been soul destroying to not be used when the team needed an impact and must have affected his confidence and self belief.
His return has seen good form and a return to winning ways. I see him as a quality player who should have been utilised a lot more this season.
It's a tricky one because as you say those goals should have given him confidence. The Brentford game saw us go behind in the 70th minute, Tanaka subbed off in the 73rd and us equalise in the 82nd. Maybe it is as simple as Farke as Farke not seeing him in his best XI, maybe he felt he played poorly and we looked better, as a team, after he was replaced. The player ratings on the BBC, voted by viewers/readers had Tanaka as our 12th highest rated player that match (although ironically higher than the player who replaced him, Aaronsen).
So maybe Farke saw the team being better with Aaranson in the midfield, alongside Ampadu and Stach. Maybe that would have continued to be the selection if Stach hadn't have got injured. Maybe it is just a pecking order thing but it seems that the player seemed reasonably happy despite not playing (despite his agent's mischief), and responded well when the chance came.
Maybe a bit like the Piroe situation. Piroe a better striker (in terms of finsihing ability) than DCL but DCL fits the team better.
Main thing is that a player responds the right way and makes it harder for the manager to drop him.
